Dran (French, b. 1979) Diese - 2018, hand-embellished screen print on woven paper, limited edition of 25, uniquely hand finished, hand signed and numbered in pencil on front
Dimensions - approx. 12.5 inches x 17.5 inches, unframed
PROVENANCE:
Tate Ward Auctions 2022
Acquired from the above by the present owner
ABOUT:
Dran was born in Toulouse, France, and is often referred to as the “French Banksy” for his success as an anonymous street artist. He reportedly began drawing on the walls of his family home and copying cartoons at a young age, and began developing the illustrative universe he works in today while attending a fine art college in his hometown. He combines both naive and dark aesthetics, often depicting children, inviting viewers to escape their world through imagination and play on one hand, while also bringing attention to the social issues of our time on the other.
Because of his anonymity, pieces by him can be relatively hard to find outside of the few select galleries he works with, unless sold by a previous collector like the one here.

PROVENANCE:
Heritage Auctions, 2022
Acquired from the above by the present owner
ABOUT:
Penny is a British-born artist who, after graduating from Chelsea School of Design, gained notoriety in the London street art scene. He’s best known for his tiny paintings on currency bills, giving the illustrations on the money new meaning, and is currently working with software programmers to find ways to deface bitcoin. In larger formats, he often translates his style by recreating works of other famous artists while making changes to the presentation and context of the pieces to express ideas beyond those in the original works. The result can be seen in the piece here, where he has recreated Basquiat’s famous Pez Dispenser and has framed it beneath broken glass, the crown cut out by a knife.

Dimensions - approx. 33.75 inches x 23.5 inches, framed
PROVENANCE:
Heritage Auctions
Acquired from the above by the present owner
ABOUT:
Alexander Calder was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. After graduating engineering school at an early age, he returned to his family trade of being an artist, and after seeing a Barnum and Bailey circus in Paris, he created an entire miniature circus made of metal that he could control by hand and carry in a suitcase. He garnered considerable attention traveling and performing with his handmade circus, gaining access to notable galleries at the time to show other aspects of his artistry. Throughout years of friendships with some of the most important artists of his era, such as Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró, and Piet Mondrian, he developed an abstract style of sculpture that would become known as the mobile. He lived a long artist’s life, creating huge outdoor sculptures in his specific style, and creating sets for ballet from composers such as Erik Satie, and he continued performing with his tiny circus long into his career.
The piece here is a signed lithograph on paper of the sketch he made for a gallery exhibition poster in 1973.

ABOUT:
Roberto Matta (Chilean, 1911 – 2002), is possibly Chile’s most famous painter and was a global icon in the world of abstract expressionism and surrealism in the 20th century. After studying and working in architecture in South America in his early 20s, Matta began pursuing surrealist approaches to drawing landscapes, which led him to Paris. There he met and befriended artists such as Arshile Gorky, Salvador Dalí, and Marcel Duchamp, who stated that Matta was the most profound artist of his generation. Matta believed that art and poetry can change lives, and his approach to capturing the relationships between space, energy, and beings greatly influenced the artists around him and the abstract expressionist movement as a whole. He is in collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and the Tate Gallery in London.
The piece here was published by Editions Alexander Kahan, New York, and Georges Visat, Paris, and was printed by Ateliers Georges Visat, Paris. Dimensions - approx. 12.5 inches x 9.75 inches, unframed

Acquired from the above by the present owner
ABOUT:
Joan Miró was one of the most influential surrealists of the 20th century, and is among the most sought-after artists by collectors today. He studied both business and art, but working in business reportedly led him to have a nervous breakdown, forcing him to focus on only art thereafter. His art career included collaborations with Max Ernst, purchases from Ernest Hemingway, and shows alongside Salvador Dali. André Breton described him as "the most Surrealist of us all." There are two separate museums in Spain dedicated just to him.
This is Miro’s first and only linocut, published in an edition of 1,000 for the Christmas 1938 edition of the prestigious art magazine XXe Siecle, with pinholes in the margin as indication of it being from the original first edition.
*The periodical XXe Siècle was founded in 1938 by art historian, writer, and publisher Gualtieri di San Lazzaro (1904–1974), while living and working in Paris. XXe Siècle combined articles with original artworks by well-known and influential artists of the time. About 60 issues were published between 1938 and 1974.

His work is held in several international collections, both public and private, and he’s represented by Exposures International in Sedona, Arizona’s largest art gallery.

He grew up in the Bronx, where a print of Manet's "A Bar at the Folies-Bergère" hung above the dining table, giving him his first connection to the world of fine art. After pursuing a degree at Carnegie Mellon University, he continued to develop a style that combines his art-school education with inspiration from his childhood loves - cartoons, graffiti, and kung fu movies - to create collages that combine painting with photos he’s found or created himself. The result are pieces that speak of the fragile nature of life as seen through his eyes, including the one here.

ABOUT TY HARVEY
I grew up in a tiny Texas town, where in my teens I met and worked with a scarcely known folk sculptor who showed me what life looks like when you put creative expression at the center of your world. A few years later, with my heart set on being a poet, I moved to Austin, finished my degree at UT, and set out traveling, as I believed a poet should do. Throughout the years, I surrounded myself with the most creative minds I could find, and eventually found myself writing arts and culture articles - first while living in Tokyo, and then in New York City - before spending years in the creative department of a global fashion merchandising brand, where I realized my life had taken a horribly wrong turn. So I threw it all away and started over.
I found myself back in Austin after over a decade, this time as a bartender with an undying love for poetics and a newfound vision for curation as a creative endeavor in and of itself. I hosted experimental classical music showcases funded by the city, released multiple creative publishing projects covered by KUT and the Austin Chronicle, and hosted intimate events around items like sticks from grave sites, meteors, and ancient artifacts, as I continue to do. Meanwhile, over years of building my own meager art collection (first of ancient pieces that foreshadow modern aesthetics, and later of modern and contemporary pieces themselves), I saw a need in Austin for an auction company solely focused on fine art, where serious collectors could buy and sell pieces on a level playing field, where they could both receive and pay a fair value for great pieces of cultural importance. And above all I saw a need for auctions that transcend the simple act of buying and selling assets, in reverence to the magic that lives in great art.
So I started this auction company under my own name to do just that: to be a preeminent market of curated fine art, serving others who understand that our lives are better when creative expression is closer to the center of our world.
