Victor Vasarely (Hungarian/French, b. 1906) Torony-Co, 1973 - limited edition postcard (signed)
From the grandfather of the style termed Op Art.
Estimated value: $300-500
DESCRIPTION:
Victor Vasarely (Hungarian/French, b. 1906) Torony-Co, 1973, framed print postcard from a limited unknown edition, signed by Vasarely in silver
Dimensions - approx. 8.75 inches x 10.75 inches, framed
PROVENANCE:
Autograph dealer Markus Brandes, Switzerland
Acquired from the above by the present owner
ABOUT:
Vasarely studied at a small private art school in the 1920s that at the time was considered Budapest’s center for Bauhaus studies. He later moved to Paris, where he opened his first studio, and embarked on a very long career of artistic invention.
Because of his early experiments with shapes and how the human eye perceives them, he is considered the grandfather of Op art. Op art is a form of abstract art that creates an optical illusion such as a sense of movement, vibration, or warping, or that presents a structure whose perceived angles and surfaces change as your eyes move through the image, like the piece we have here.

Lot 2 - Shepard Fairey (American, b. 1970) Grace & Power Under Pressure - 2022, screenprint (signed)
From the creator of Obama’s “Hope” poster and Obey Giant.
Starting bid: $400
Estimated value: $500-$1200
Buyer's premium: 18%
DESCRIPTION:
Shepard Fairey (American, b. 1970) Grace & Power Under Pressure - green, 2022, framed limited edition screen print, hand numbered and signed by the artist
Dimensions - approx. 25.5 inches x 32 inches, framed
PROVENANCE:
Post Modern Vandal, Nevada (acquired directly from the artist)
Acquired from the above by the present owner
*A certificate of authenticity from the gallery is included.
ABOUT:
Shepard Fairey began as a street artist, placing stickers of Andre the Giant in public spaces around the country in the 1990s.
The notoriety he gained from this project led him to a career that merged street art and marketing, working with companies such as Pepsi and Hasbro, as well as musicians such as the Black Eyed Peas, Smashing Pumpkins, and Bauhaus. Later, the subjects of his work often centered on portraits with political themes, like his best known piece, the Barack Obama "Hope" poster for the 2008 presidential campaign.
The piece at auction here is somewhat uncommon in his body of work, free of his lifelong focus on people and brands. In line with more-traditional artworks, this silk screen instead points at our relationship with nature and the idea of beauty in peril - specifically, the ever-shrinking tiger population in Southeast Asia - and was made in celebration of the Year of the Tiger, in 2022.

Lot 3 - Jenny Holzer (American, b. 1950) The Violence of Handwriting Across a Page - 2022, (signed)
From one of the world’s most revered conceptual artists.
Starting bid: $350
Estimated value: $400-$600
Buyer's premium: 18%
DESCRIPTION:
Louise Bourgeois (French, b. 1911) x Jenny Holzer (American, b. 1950) The Violence of Handwriting Across a Page - 2022, exhibition book, numbered and signed by Jenny Holzer
Dimensions - approx. 16 inches x 16 inches x 2 inches
PROVENANCE:
JRP Editions - Geneva, Switzerland
Acquired from the above by the present owner, 2024
ABOUT:
Jenny Holzer is one of the best-known conceptual artists of the 20th century. She began her art career in the late 1970s, pasting broad sheets with text in public spaces throughout Manhattan, and later creating large (often electronic) signs with such phrases as "All things are delicately interconnected," "Men don’t protect you anymore," and "Protect me from what I want." She’s long been one of the country’s most celebrated artists, with pieces installed at the now-gone World Trade Center, and multiple exhibitions at the Guggenheim.
The piece here is a limited edition signed book, in its original box. Although it was created and signed by Jenny Holzer, it interestingly isn’t made up of her work. It instead is filled with cropped views of pieces from the late artist Louise Bourgeois, for an exhibition Holzer curated in 2022 for Kunstmuseum Basel.
Louise Bourgeois lived a remarkable artist's life of her own. She was born in Paris in 1911, ran her own gallery in her 20s, married and moved to New York City where she lived the rest of her life as a very prolific painter and printmaker until her death in 2010. She was a renowned leader and teacher among female artists and revolutionary thinkers, and in her later years found acclaim as an artist of her age and generation.
So, Jenny Holzer was asked to curate an exhibition of Bourgeois' work, and she created the book here for that exhibition, a collage of sorts made by Holzer to frame what she saw as Bourgeois' preoccupations and obsessions, the things that tied her work together, as Holzer put together the exhibition. And so what we have is a very unique form of expression, combining two great artists, a book numbered and signed by Jenny Holzer.

Dimensions - approx. 11 inches x 13.5 inches, framed
The work here is a print of a piece originally created in 1919. It was once a page in a book titled *Marc Chagall*, printed in 1945 by Pierre Matisse Editions, with the illustration hand-pasted onto the page. Multiple pages of the book were signed by Chagall as part of a gift given to Carl Schniewind, then the curator of the Art institute of Chicago. Since then, this page was removed from the book and framed, as you see here.
PROVENANCE:

Private collection, Madeira, Portugal
Fabio Pinto, in conjunction with Shapiro Books of London (acquired from the above)

This piece comes with a certificate of authenticity from K Gallery, as well as a facsimile of the authentication done by Comité Marc Chagall regarding the book it was a part of, as well as some supporting documents of the page's placement in the original book for reference.
ABOUT:
Chagall was born in the Pale of Settlement of the Russian Empire and grew up to be one of the most prominent artists of the 20th Century as a member of the modernist avant-garde. Chagall and Picasso were close friends for about 20 years. In fact Pablo Picasso once said that "When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is." Unfortunately their friendship supposedly ended after Chagall made a remark about Picasso at a party saying: "What a genius, that Picasso… It's a pity he doesn't paint."
Chagall’s work often focuses on Eastern European and Jewish folklore, with exhibitions of his work at museums such as the Louvre and the Grande Palais in Paris, and permanent displays at the Lincoln Center, the ceiling of the Paris Opera, and the Art Institute of Chicago, to which the piece here is directly connected.

Lot 6 - Daniel Johnston (American, b. 1961) Untitled, original drawing on paper
From one of outsider art’s most celebrated minds.

Buyer's premium: 18%
DESCRIPTION:
Daniel Johnston (American, b. 1961) untitled, framed original drawing on paper
Dimensions - approx. 13 inches x 15.5 inches, framed
This untitled and undated piece is one of several Captain America drawings Johnston created throughout his life. Written in speech bubbles are the phrases: “Get real and I’ll be there okay?” “In love all problems disappear.” And “I love you.”
PROVENANCE:
Gallery 30 South - Las Vegas, Nevada
Acquired from the above by the present owner, 2022
ABOUT:
Daniel Johnston was one of America’s most prized underground musicians and artists, known for the childlike quality he brought to everything he created. He began his career writing and recording songs on his family piano in West Virginia. After moving to Austin in 1984, he worked at McDonald’s and gave out his homemade tape recordings with hand-drawn covers to people he met, garnering him substantial attention, with packed crowds at his live shows.
The frog drawing from the cover of his album *Hi, How Are You?* has become well known, with a protected mural of the same drawing at the corner of 21st and Guadalupe Streets in Austin, and with Kurt Cobain wearing a t-shirt with the same drawing on the MTV Awards in 1992, during the rise of Nirvana. Johnston struggled with mental illness his entire life and was the focus of the 2005 documentary *The Devil and Daniel Johnston.*
Although his music production and performances decreased as he got older, he continued to focus on visual art until his death in 2019, leaving a substantial body of illustrated work, much of which is on 8 ½ x 11 drawing paper, like the one we have here.

ABOUT:
*Le Tigre - 2022, oil, acrylic, and spray paint on canvas - holds the artist’s record at auction, having sold for $277,200 at Sotheby’s in March of 2022.*
Jordan Kerwick was born in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia, and currently lives in southern France. He began his art career in 2016 and quickly gained the attention of galleries and collectors for his distinctive style of putting the world of his imagination on canvas. His work falls across a broad spectrum, from colorful paintings of animals, to rough-hewn depictions of everyday objects, to black-and-white abstractions, often mixing these elements together in one painting. In all his pieces, there’s a certain surrender to imperfection that brings life to his work in a way that feels both dreamlike and honest. His sudden rise to fame is balanced with an introverted-homebody life with his wife and kids, which has allowed him to create a very impressive catalog of work in the past decade, and he's poised to become one of the best-known painters of his generation.
The work we have here is titled "Dans le Rue," translated as "In the Street," from a group show in Australia in 2018. It's one of the black-and-white abstractions from very early in his career, a style that helped him first gain global attention and is seldom seen from him now.

RETNA (American, b 1979) Triple Dip, Limited Edition Lithograph, signed
From the artist famous for inventing his own written language.
Estimated Value: $10,000-$15,000
DESCRIPTION:
Marquis Lewis, aka RETNA (American, b 1979) Triple Dip, 2012, Lithograph from a limited edition of 10, hand signed
Dimensions - approx. 16.5 inches x 13.8 inches
PROVENANCE:
Maddox Gallery, London (acquired from the artist in 2012)
Acquired from the above in 2021 by the present owner
*A certificate of authenticity from the gallery is included.
ABOUT:
RETNA began as a graffiti artist in Los Angeles in the 1990s, and developed a style around his own alphabet that incorporates elements of Gothic, Arabic, and Hebrew inscriptions, Egyptian and Inca pictographs, Asian calligraphy, and graffiti lettering, all in layered pallets of color. He imparts specific meanings into his pieces through his script, in hopes that viewers from all over the world will find comforting similarities between it and their mother languages, even if they can't understand the exact meanings conveyed.
In the early 2000s, he gained the attention of RnB singer Usher, who commissioned him to create a portrait of Marvin Gaye in his distinctive style, giving him a level of notoriety he’d yet achieved. Since then, he’s worked with brands such as Nike, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel, and created the backdrops at the San Francisco Opera and Washington National Opera for their presentations of Aida. His work is in the collections of comedian Dave Chappell and art dealer and curator Jeffrey Deitch.
The piece here is a signed etching titled “Triple Dip” from a series of 10 created in 2012. It’s one of his smallest and earliest pieces in circulation, and is a great early example of the language he invented, gaining him attention from the renowned names he would later go on to work with, and ultimately leading to the celebrated career he has today.
Because of its pivotal position in the timeline of his career, and its small size compared to his later work, this piece is relatively rare, and I’m very proud to present it to you here.

ABOUT:
Salvador Dali was the leader of the surrealist movement that spanned the 1920s through the 1960s, and was one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. He dedicated his career to exploring the inner workings of the mind, specifically, how the subconscious expresses itself through creativity, resulting in dreamlike portrayals of his subjects. All the while, he engaged in wildly absurd acts of self promotion, such as showing up to an interview wearing scuba diving equipment, which made him a household name to many throughout the postwar period. He has created some of the most recognizable pieces of art in modern history, including The Persistence of Memory, best remembered for its depiction of melting watches.
The piece we have here is the limited-edition lithograph with embossing titled Tauromachie IV, or Bullfighter number 4. It's one from a series of five bullfighter images Dali created in 1968. Everything about this piece, from the artistry, to the printing and embossing quality, to the paper, is as extraordinary as one would expect from an artist as renowned as Salvador Dali, and I'm proud to offer it to you here.

Starting bid: $3800

In line with more-traditional artworks, this silk screen instead points at our relationship with nature and the idea of beauty in peril - specifically, the ever-worsening health of our oceans - and was made in reference to World Water Day, in 2021.

He's maintained a sense of street style throughout his career, as can be seen in the work here.
